Shop Your Closet: Styling a White Button Down

written by Ayla Sydney

“I have a closet full of clothes but nothing to wear” seems to be the eternal struggle for so many of us. We get so sick of repeating the same outfits that we have no choice but to log on to our favorite fashion sites and spend the day away. Well, that all ends now. Rather than shopping for a new look online, why not shop your closet instead? Today we’re showing you five ways to style a timeless piece: the white button-down.

Under a Crewneck

Layering your button-down under a crewneck is the perfect way to make two pieces pop in a new way. The shirt is being utilized but isn’t necessarily the star of the show, and the exposed collar spices up what may otherwise be an ordinary sweatshirt. This combo is especially great when it starts to get a little chilly and you want to layer up without hiding under a jacket. A white tennis skirt and a gold chain are the perfect additions if you’re looking for something a little more feminine, while your favorite distressed denim and white sneakers give it a sportier twist.

With Track Pants

Raise your hand if you’re guilty of sacrificing fashion for comfort… We thought so. Lucky for you, athleisure is more popular than ever, flooding the marketplace with trendy, new takes on your classic track pants. Boasting bold colors in luxe materials along with floor-skimming snap detailing and striped sides, these are not your grandpa’s sweats. They can be easily transitioned from loungewear to streetwear when paired with a button-down. The tailored top lends itself perfectly to being dressed down, whether it’s for a brunch date or a day out with the girls.

Under a Sweater Vest

Looking to dip your toe into the recently popular prep trend? This is the button-down variation for you. A cable-knit or argyle variety seamlessly blends with the vibe of the simple staple and leaves you with a fresh new way to sport it! We love styling this pants-free with a knee-high boot or with a pair of boyfriend jeans and white sneakers. If a sweater vest is not readily available to you in your closet, they’re incredibly cheap and easy to buy second-hand! Pop into your local thrift store or check out Depop for a wide variety of colors and styles.

As a Dress

Ever wake up at your boyfriend’s house and need something to wear? Well, look no further. Belting a larger button-down and wearing it as a dress is a sexy, new take on the classic. The belt provides some much-coveted waist definition, while the open top and exposed leg keep it fun and flirty. Beyond this, the styling opportunities are endless. This look is absolutely killer with anything from Doc Martens to a thigh-high boot, and longs to be topped off with your favorite jewelry.

With Leather Pants

While this may not be new to you, we’re here to remind you that this look is absolute FIRE. It’s almost impossible not to feel confident in a well-fitting pair of leather pants. With the addition of the crisp, white top, leather can easily transition from day to night or from the office to happy hour. Simplistic in color palette, but not in style, this look thrives alongside a bold lip or a statement shoe. Not your vibe? You can’t go wrong with a black boot or strappy heel.
